Maja Johanne Lauesen (b. 1993)

“Growing New Balance”, 2023. Unsigned. Relief made in spackling compound, acrylic, and wood. 24×28×6 cm.

The Danish artist Maja Johanne Lauesen (b. 1993) lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. She has a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Bergen Art Academy, Norway, and Paris-Ceryg, France. Lauesen's artistic practice reflects her exploration of sculpture, materials and the intersection between nature and the body. Through her work, Lauesen immerses herself in the relationship between form, texture, and the organic world. Her sculptures and reliefs are inspired by experiences and influences that draw on processes found in nature. Her work explores the contrast between soft and hard, the visible and the hidden, connection and alienation. Parallels between the organic and the artificial. Lauesen's process involves observation, experimentation, and manipulation of materials such as wood and spackling compound. With a background in carpentry, her work combines theoretical insights from ecofeminism and queer theory with a hands-on approach to sculpture and relief works.
