The German artist Christian Lemmerz (b. 1959) lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark and Pietrasanta, Italy. He is educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and the Academy in Carrara, Italy. As a visual artist and sculptor, Lemmerz’s oeuvre spans materials such as marble and bronze. Regardless of material, form or medium, his practice revolves around an investigation of the themes of suffering, death, identity, existence and being. He shows us the decay and destruction of the body, but also has an eye for the religious out-of-body experience with his provocative and expressive practice.
